Heads up App Developers! The Federal Trade Commission is working on a second report that focuses on mobile apps for kids: the Commission is reviewing the practices of apps targeted to kids to see whether they are complying with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. An earlier report from the FTC this year examined whether kids apps followed basic COPPA compliance. For that study, the FTC did not download the apps, but rather focused on whether the apps offered appropriate notices for parents. However, we have heard that for the upcoming report, the Commission downloaded and tested the apps, documented their data collection and sharing practices.
Given the intense focus that the FTC and other privacy advocates have on protecting kids information – now would be a good time for you to check in on your COPPA compliance.
